| Subject | Chemical laboratories--Louisiana Southern University and A & M College--Buildings
|
| Description | The scientific courses of the University were greatly aided by the Morrill Fund of 1890. The courses were taught largely to meet the conditions of the appropriation and to give the pupils "scientific agriculture and scientific mechanics." Chemistry was a part of the agriculture courses. Chemistry was also taught in the "theoretical part of the domestic science or cookery and general household science." In 1901, the chemistry laboratory was moved from the main building to a more spacious building and occupied three rooms. The largest room was for lectures and recitation, and was furnished with demonstration tables and gas. One of the other rooms was for the chemistry equipment. The laboratory was located in the third room, and was "well supplied with apparatus and chemicals". Because of the importance of sugar to the state's economy, the course in "sugar chemistry" offered its own inducements to the Louisiana students. The practical aspect of sugar raising and making molasses were conducted at the agricultural department. Beginning with the sophomore class, the study of chemistry in the agricultural course of the college extended through three sessions. In other curses, the study of chemistry was limited to the nine months of the sophomore class. The laboratory was located in the third room, and was "well supplied with apparatus and chemicals".
