The
girl's
Industrial
department
generally
produced
more
graduates
[with
the
exception
of the
high
school
and
grammar
school
sections
of the
school]
, the
Cooking
department
from its
beginning
experienced
rapid
growth
. The
feasibility
of a
cooking
school
was
discussed
by the
executive
committee
on
June
23
,
1900
. The
committee
decided
to have the
president
and the
faculty
study
the
proposal
,
collect
data
on
cost
for
establishing
such
a
department
and
report
back
. They
agreed
to the
position
and the
October
executive
committee
meeting
began
setting
up
such
a
department
if a
teacher
could
be
obtained
for
forty
dollars
per
month
.
No
action
was
taken
on the
cooking
school
for the
next
seven
years
. In
June
,
1907
, a
motion
was
adopted
to
study
the
possibility
of a
cooking
school.The
money
to
finance
such
a
department
was the
only
drawback
. The
president
announced
his
desire
for a
cooking
department
in
early
1910
.
Still
,
no
real
efforts
were
made
until
1911
. In
April
, the
cost
of
utensils
and
equipment
was
set
at
$400.00
. These
figures
were
sent
to the
president
of the
faculty
and
secretary
treasurer
of the
board
. At the
July
annual
meeting
of the
board
, the
discussion
to
hire
a
teacher
of
Domestic
Science
for the
cooking
school
was
referred
to the
executive
committee
with the
power
to
act
.
Five
days
later
the
secretary
of the
board
and the
president
were
accepting
applications
for
teachers
of the
department
. In
September
, the
United
States
Department
of
Interior
approved
a
teacher
of
Domestic
Science
for the
cooking
school
.
Miss
Francis
L
.
Mowry
, from
Boston
,
Massachusetts
, was
selected
to
begin
on
November
1
,
1911
at a
salary
of
$75
a
month
.
