Subject	Confederate General; Battle of the Crater; Readjuster Party; Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute
Description	William Mahone was a railroad engineer, a Confederate General, and a hero in the Battle of the Crater, July 30, 1864. After the Civil War he was one of the people who helped establish the Readjuster Party. The Party's support of the public schools attracted black voters who helped them to gain control of the state legislature in 1879. Among pledges made to African Americans by the Readjusters was the establishment of a state college to train teachers for the black school system. Without the backing of Mahone's party, Virginia State University might not have been established.
