Description	The prominent African American educator, Dr. Lucy Moten (1851-1933), was the first African American principal of Miner Normal School. She served in this capacity from 1883 until 1921. At the time she was principal, Miner was a two-year public teacher training school. “The methods and equipment,” were considered to be “thoroughly modern.” She “inspired students by instilling cultural pride, dedication, as well as developing their intelligence.” Dr. Moten was born in Fauquier County, Virginia to free African American parents.
