The
college
was
named
in
honor
of
James
Ormond
Wilson
(1825-1911)
.
Wilson
graduated
from
Dartmouth
University
. He was
trustee
of the
Washington
Public
Schools
from
1861
through
1869
, and the
second
superintendent
of
schools
for
Washington
Public
schools
,
serving
from
1870-1885
. He also
served
as
President
of the
National
Education
Association
in
1880
. He also
served
as
secretary
of the
American
Colonization
Society
in
1892
, the
organization
that
founded
Liberia
. This
bronze
bas-relief
was
presented
to
Wilson
Normal
School
by his
daughters
. The
plaque
was
transferred
on
April
17
,
1962
from the
hall
of the
Wilson
Building
at
DCTC
to the
new
James
Ormond
Wilson
Elementary
School
upon
its
dedication
.
