On this postcard are two buildings which were used for male students when Virginia State University opened in 1883. Reading left to right they were called the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Not many HBCUs had Reserve Officers Training Corps, at the beginning of World War I. James Nicholas, who will graduate from Virginia State and become a full professor at Virginia State and Rector of the Board of Visitors, was a member of this corp.

Theodosia Fraser was the only female student enrolled in the CCC flight training program at the university in 1941. Unfortunately, she died in a crash.
