Many Miner alumni achieved prominence in the community, both in teaching and other fields of endeavor. Brig. Gen. West A. Hamilton owned a printing company and served as a member of the DC School Board for 21 years until he retired at age 81.

Nelly Hill was in the first class of the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute on October 1, 1883. She was one of seven daughters of John Henry and Rosetta Hill. She was 17 years old and had been born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
