Not many HBCUs had Reserve Officers Training Corps, at the beginning of World War I. James Nicholas, who will graduate from Virginia State and become a full professor at Virginia State and Rector of the Board of Visitors, was a member of this corp.

Before there was a ROTC at Virginia Normal and Industrial Institute there was an attempt to organize a core similar to the one which was at Hampton. This was an organization from 1914 though 1919.
Paine College's High School Victory Corp Gardeners (Men And Women). Gardening And Farming Were Taught In Classrooms And From Demonstrations. The Gardens Were Campus Property. Vegetables Grown In These Gardens Were Served In The Dining Hall.
