The Striders, dressed in red and gold uniforms, was the 131 piece marching band of UDC. They would announce their arrival, by shouting “Striders” in perfect unison.

UDC students voted and chose Firebirds as the nickname for UDC teams. The announcement was made at a game between UDC and Virginia Union University, on November 30, 1978
